RELEASE OVER-FUNCTIONING
WEEK 18- PORTAL: THE ADAPTATIONS
The card for this week is Release Over Functioning. Before you start reading…take a moment to take in the image. This card is an invitation and a permission slip to return to yourself.
For the next 7 days, use this card as a way to recognize your impulse to say yes when your heart is screaming no. This card invites you to recognize the cost of over-functioning? How did that become the best solution for you to survive? What messages did you receive that made you conclude your value was measured by how many plates you could keep spinning? How do these internalized messages get expressed in your present life. Keep an eye on that this week.
Place your hands on your heart a for a moment…take a few breaths…good…now let’s begin…
Release Over-functioning
“You don’t have to set yourself on fire to keep others warm.” — Unknown
🌬️ Invitation
This card invites you to recognize the cost of over-functioning—not just in your body and time, but in your spirit. It’s so easy to equate busyness with worthiness, or to mask emotional discomfort behind constant activity. Over-functioning is often an adaptive strategy rooted in a fear of what will surface in the stillness. But the truth is: your value is not measured by how many plates you spin.
This card is an invitation to pause, soften, and allow yourself to feel.
❤️🩹Adaptation
Over-functioning is a brilliant, exhausting adaptation. It often forms in childhood homes where chaos, unpredictability, or emotional absence made it safer to do than to feel. When we learn that our role is to be the fixer, the helper, the one who gets things done, we build a self-worth scaffold around productivity and responsibility.
But beneath the relentless doing is often a terrified nervous system—trying to create control, earn approval, or avoid collapse. The pattern persists into adulthood, becoming so reflexive that stillness feels unsafe, even selfish.
Over-functioning isn’t a flaw. It’s a learned survival skill. But it is no longer the only way. This card marks a turning point—an exhale into trust, enoughness, and shared responsibility.
You were never meant to carry everything alone.
🔍Inquiry Questions
For a deeper inquiry use these questions to reflect, for your journal and contemplation to better understand your relationship tot his Adaptation:
• What am I avoiding by staying so busy?
• Where in my life do I feel the pressure to do more than my share?
• Who might I become if I let myself rest and receive support?
🔻Releasing Statements
• I release my dependence on staying busy to avoid feeling.
• I release the belief that my worth is tied to my productivity.
• I release the fear that everything will fall apart without me.
🔺Receiving Statements
• I receive permission to rest and allow space for my emotions.
• I receive the support that is already available to me.
• I receive the freedom to just be, without doing.
🌬️ Closing Whisper
Inhale ease… Exhale urgency.
Let yourself stop.
Let the world spin without your holding it up.
Let your nervous system unclench.
There is a sacred intelligence in your stillness.
There is a worth that lives beneath your doing.
There is a life waiting for you—not as a task, but as a gift.
You can rest now.
You are enough, even when you’re still.
